Skullcandy hit the UK scene a few months ago with their range of personal audio products featuring in one of the top music retailers, HMV. With high visibility to the mainstream audience, Skullcandy has quickly established itself as the premium ‘it’ brand for audio fans. The Skullcandy brand emits this edgy extreme sports feel, but don’t worry, if you’re not in to any of that, and you’re just looking for some decent head gear, then you should read on to find out more about the Full Metal Jacket and why I think they’re the best damn set of headphones I’ve ever used.
The Full Metal Jacket earphones are featured in the mid to high-end price range with a price tag of around £50, not bad for what I consider to be a no-comprise set of earphones. From build quality to audio clarity, I couldn’t find fault with these earphones. Tried and tested materials for superior build quality has gone in to the making of the Full Metal Jacket. You’ll find that the headphones, as the name suggests, is made of a metal alloy, most likely aluminium.
If you enjoy blocking out the sound of the outside world, or just your colleagues in the office, then the noise cancelling ability of the Full Metal Jacket will be a bonus feature for you. When I have these earphones in at normal audio levels, I can only just about hear what’s going on in the outside world, and that’s at street level demonstrating the superb noise cancelling ability.
Skullcandy bundle a carrying case and different sized earbuds to fit your ear, and because the Full Metal Jacket uses thermoplastic elastomers for the wire, when you shove them in to the case, they don’t get so tangled up that it takes you several minutes to untangle each time you get them out. At the end of the 1.4m cable, you’ll find a 3.5mm gold plated jack for the best conductivity from your mp3 player. Built in to the cable, there’s also a volume slider for quick access to volume adjustment. The Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket can really blast out your tunes, so unless you’ve got Sound Check enabled on your music player, it’s handy to have this for the occasions when the tunes get a bit too extreme for your ear drums.
I’ve tested a few headphones in my time, and each one is ever so slightly different and some just don’t have the levels right. Skullcandy fortunately got it right with not only the looks, but the audio reproduction as well.
Audio quality is first rate with ample bass complemented by crisp and clear high and mid level tone allowing everything from Basshunter to Chris Brown sound brilliant, natural and clear. Throw in the excellent build quality and the magic tangle free cable and you’ve got yourself the best in class set of earphones.
