Logic3 i-Station 7

Logic3 have updated the i-Station that we reviewed when we first started up the TechCast Network site. That goes back about 12 months now and I was certainly impressed with how complete it was in terms of features and how good the sound quality was for the money.

So I’m back again with an updated version, the i-Station 7 just to make sure that you’re all reminded that you don’t have to spend iPod Hi-Fi money to get a decent set up.

What’s in the box
The i-Station 7 comes complete with IR remote, 3.5mm line in cable, AC Aadaptor and an assortment of docking cradle plates for the various iPod sizes new and old. They’ve removed the FireWire and USB connections from the previous model but they’ve included the 30-pin dock connector so all you need is the iPod USB cable to get this to connect with your computer.

Features
The combined output power for this speaker system is not going to blow you away like the more expensive systems will do. Don’t forget what category the Logic3 belongs in, they’re not going for high-end audio but they’re not going for cheap and nasty either. Logic3 have managed to strike a balance between the two in achieving good sound quality through the two stereo speakers and 2.5-inch rear woofer.

Complete with iPod docking port using your existing iPod data cable, line in and the ability to power from batteries or 9V power adapter. The fold away design and the fact that it can power from batteries means that this system was designed for portability in mind and as always with portable systems you rarely get high end output.

The infra-red remote control is slim and simple offering relevant functionality such as the ability to skip albums and playlists and shortcut keys for initiating shuffle and repeat options.

Blue LEDs light up when the system is powered, illuminating your iPod whilst playing. Turning the 3D Surround off changes the LEDs to orange.

Quality of audio
With only 12 Watts RMS you don’t really expect this system to be able to pump out loads of volume or at best in a distorted fashion. However, the i-Station 7 is capable of producing room filling sound with appropriate levels of bass and a clear audio output for your iPod tunes.

The only thing that I found to be missing from the audio quality is the in-ability to adjust bass levels or any equalizer options other than the 3D Surround which doesn’t really do much to change how your music sounds.

I’ve been testing these speakers for several weeks now and have been using it as my primary audio system for my 30GB iPod. For general listening it’s great, the remote control doesn’t require line of sight to work so I can adjust volume, change tracks or change playlists and albums if I wanted to without having to turn around or get up and reach for the the buttons on my iPod.

I can imagine myself being able to take this system with me if I was ever to travel away or go on holiday. The fold away design means that the woofer flips forward and clips in to place in between the two side speakers and the removable back support becomes the protection for the speaker cones.

Verdict
The Logic3 i-Station 7 gets my recommendation and proudly wears the TechCast Recommended Award. I dare any other competitor to try and beat the performance and features of this system on a similar pricing level. Sound quality is awesome and the inclusion of the IR remote this time round just completes the entire package.

If you’re looking for a decent set of speakers that can be used both at home and whilst your on your travels. This set sits nicely in my office and I want to crank up the tunes but it also works well when I want some morning tunes to wake me up too.

Just one last note about the i-Station 7, get yourself a copy of Fratellis - Flathead and play it full blast, it sounds awesome!
